Beekeeping Adventures: Painting the Bee Chimney
Hey there, fellow bee enthusiasts!
I wanted to share a recent little adventure, which involved giving my bee chimney a fresh coat of paint. It might sound simple, but with bees involved, it's always an adventure!
It was one of those dreary days in the Riverland, with the sun playing hide and seek behind the clouds. It was the perfect opportunity to take the tower off my hive and give it a fresh coat of paint. The last thing I wanted was for it to rot away. And guess what? John decided to drop by, so you're in for a treat with his commentary!
Now, I must admit, the girls (bees) were a tad more active than I'd anticipated. There was a moment when I nearly tripped right onto the hive. Can you imagine the chaos? But, with a bit of careful maneuvering, I managed to get the tower off without any stings. Phew!
Once I had the tower safely in my shed, it was time to get painting. I decided to give it an undercoat first. And then, the real challenge began. John dared me to paint flowers on it. I'm no artist, but I thought, "Why not give it a shot?" Let's just say, it was... interesting. My attempt at a tree ended up looking more like a cactus. It's the effort that counts, right?
To add a bit of flair, I decided to stick on some butterfly stickers. They added a nice touch if I do say so myself. The bees liked it, too.
I also made a few modifications to the chimney, like adding a finer mesh at the bottom to prevent the bees from crawling out, which they had been doing with the previous, larger mesh. Always learning and improving; that's the beekeeping way!
In the end, the bee chimney turned out pretty great. It might not win any art awards, but it's functional and adds a touch of colour to the backyard. Plus, it was a fun little project to break up the routine.
Until next time, keep buzzing and happy beekeeping!
Cheers,
Mark, The Bush Bee Man
