Subtle Visual Effects in 'Scooter'
In film production, the most powerful visual effects (VFX) often go unnoticed by the viewer. This case study explores how Six Foot Four Productions (SFFP) implemented this concept in producing the short film 'Scooter'.
'Scooter', directed, co-produced, and edited by John deCaux at SFFP, required over 20 visual effects shots. Unlike many VFX implementations, these were designed to be unseen, quietly elevating the storytelling and immersive experience of the film.
A key sequence in 'Scooter' involved the main character, Desmond, riding his scooter alongside a busy highway. To create this sequence safely and convincingly, the team collaborated with 'Smooth Flow Traffic Management' to film Desmond and the traffic separately. They then used rotoscoping techniques to composite Desmond into the traffic scene, generating a thrilling yet safe visual experience
Additionally, SFFP utilized CGI to perfectly time the vehicles' movements in shots perfectly, enhancing the rhythm of the edit. They also used VFX in drone shots of Desmond riding his scooter, combining 2D images and 3D models to create realistic representations of the character and his movements.
